In Lauren Hillenbrand’s non-fictional novel, Unbroken, Louie Zamperini must abandon his Olympic dreams once World War II emerges and the fight for his life begins. Louie's inner-fortitude enables him to triumph through impeding adversities of which challenge his faith. Louie’s internal and external conflicts resonate with the everyday man as he encounters obstacles and inspires the reader to persevere in times of hopelessness. Organic imagery is achieved through her use of prose delivering the reader the real-life experiences of Louie Zamperini. Through repetition of his slipping Christian faith and emotionally-wrenching language, Unbroken empowers people to persist while in torment with defiance and hope. "When he thought of his history, what resonated with him now was not all that he had suffered but the divine love that he believed had intervened to save him" (383). |
